Legendary actor Pran dies at 93

Pran, one of Bollywood's most respected actors, died in Mumbai's Lilavati
Hospital today. He was 93 and had been
admitted to hospital a month ago.

He died after a spell of prolonged illness,"
his daughter Pinky told news agency PTI.
"He was not keeping well, he was very
weak. His health was deteriorating," she
added.

Pran received the Dadasaheb Phalke
Award this year in May. He was unable to
travel to Delhi to receive the award at the
presentation ceremony because of ill
health. He was given the award at his
home in Mumbai the next day.

Pran, star of films such as Zanjeer and Amar Akbar Anthony , began his
career as a hero in Punjabi films, made a
tremendous impact on Bollywood as the
villain in Dilip Kumar's Ram Aur Shyam and was the first actor to break
stereotype by playing character roles as
well. In the '70s, there was almost no
major film that did not feature Pran and
he was often higher paid than the hero.
Pran was credited with making the role of the villain as important as
the hero's, and
was known for his sophistication and style
on screen.

Pran was also credited with helping actor
Amitabh Bachchan get his biggest break - Zanjeer, which marked the
rise of the Angry Young Man and made Amitabh
Bachchan famous. Pran played one of his
best known roles - the Pathan Sher Khan -
in Zanjeer. He and Amitabh Bachchan formed a long and successful screen
partnership after Zanjeer and struck up a lifelong friendship. Pran
made one of his
last public appearances at Amitabh
Bachchan's 70th birthday party in October
last year.

Pran's other famous films include Madhumati, Half Ticket, Upkar,
Kashmir Ki Kali, Don, Karz, Naseeb and Shahenshah. He last appeared
on-screen in 1997's Mrityudaata.

He is survived by his wife Shukla,
daughter Pinky, and sons Arvind and Sunil.

Arshad Warsi returns to choreographing after 20 years

Before he became an actor, Arshad Warsi was a choreographer -- and
he returns to choreographing after 20
years with his forthcoming film Calling Mr Joe B Carvalho in which he
directs a song.

Arshad says dance is his passion.

"I am enjoying it and it feels good.
Dancing is my passion and I enjoy dancing.
It has been ages since I did my kind of
dance. So I am enjoying it now. I have
done the choreography, movements, and
body language," the 45-year-old said.

Calling Mr. Joe B Carvalho is a comedy that also stars Shakti Kapoor,
Soha Ali Khan,
Geeta Basra and Javed Jaffrey, among
others.

Arshad, who made his acting debut in
1996 with Tere Mere Sapne, now hopes to choreograph at least one song in each of
his films.

"I felt I won't be able to do it. But now I
feel like choreographing at least one song
in every film like Prabhudheva," he said. Arshad used to choreograph
for plays and
jazz performances and accepts that dance
today has completely changed. However,
it is not tough to adapt to the current
trend.

"I had never done film songs, I used to do
English, modern jazz and plays. I did just
one film, the title credit role track of Roop Ki Raani Choron Ka Raja.
It was very different. Definitely, the trend has
changed, what happened then and what
happens today is completely different,"
Arshad said.

"But if you are a dancer, then it is not
tough to adapt. A dancer is a dancer. if I
can do jazz, then I can also do modern
jazz, break and Hindi dance also. Give me
anything, I can even do Bharatnatyam if
taught," he added.

In 1991, Arshad won the Indian dance
competition and later went on to bag the
fourth prize in the modern jazz category in
1992 World Dance championship held in
London.

He even opened a dance school called Awesome .

All 100 crore films are not great, says John Abraham

Actor-producer John Abraham feels that all Rs 100 crore club films are not
great.

After the critical and commercial success
of Vicky Donor , the actor's production house JA Entertainment and Rising Sun
Films have teamed up once again for Madras Cafe.

"This is a serious film. We believe in
making quality films. I don't know how
much crores the film would make. I feel all
Rs 100 crore films are not the greatest
movies," John said.

A spy thriller, the film is a story based on
the political relations between India and
Sri Lanka and it releases on August 23.

The other two big films releasing next
month are Chennai Express (on August 8 - Eid) and Once Upon Ay Time in
Mumbaai Dobaara! (August 15).

"Holidays do get you a good opening but
at the end of the day, the content, quality
of the film will speak. We are confident
about our film and its release date. We
wanted a clear open window and we
have got that. It is a clutter breaker film, it is a very special
project... we have spent
six-seven years on it," John said.

"We want to make entertaining films with
strong content. We want to make quality
films," he said.

There were reports that the film has a
reference to Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's
assassination and also deals with the
LTTE's activities in Sri Lanka.

"The film has no such depictions. The
backdrop of the film is India-Sri Lanka and
after that the entire story is fictional. It is
a realistic film. I'm satisfied with the final
cut," director Shoojit Sircar said.

Alia Bhatt to walk the ramp for jewellery brand at bridal week

Young Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt will sashay down the India Bridal
Fashion Week (IBFW) ramp for jewellery
brand Azva by World Gold Council.

The forthcoming six-day fashion
extravaganza will start from July 23 at The
Grand Hotel in south Delhi. Alia, 20, will
walk on the ramp on the event's last day.

The brand's collection revolves around the
theme of wedding.

"Every design has been made keeping in
mind the bride who is modern and
contemporary in style. Alia Bhatt
resonates the designs extremely well. She
is young, vivacious and is the perfect fit
for what we are trying to communicate," Vipin Sharma, director-jewellery, World
Gold Council (India) Private Limited, said.

"The designs are stylised in a
contemporary way and is meant for young

Alia, daughter of veteran filmmaker
Mahesh Bhatt, started her film career with Student Of The Year (SOTY)
last year. She has recently wrapped the shoot of Imtiaz
Ali's Highway, in which she is paired with Randeep Hooda. The film
will release on
December 13.

Another project in her kitty is Abhishek
Varman's 2 States, in which she will share screen space with Arjun Kapoor.

Anushka Tears Her Dress For Madhuri?

At a recent event actress Anushka
Sharma ran from her backstage area to
the main venue where the audince was
seated, just to get a glimpse of Madhuri
Dixit performing live on stage.

Anushka was wearing an exclusive gown
designed by Roberto Cavalli, but she was
so excited to watch Madhuri on stage for
the first time that while running she
ended up tearing her dress.

Anushka says she is sure even the
designer wont mind it, given her fan
adulation for the Dhak Dhak girl. Both
actresses have not worked with each
other but have had successful pairings
with Shah Rukh Khan.

Aashiqui 2, YJHD Escalate Their Profits At The Box Office

Both Aashiqui 2 and Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani has beaten their own score
in terms of box office returns! Aashiqui 2
made on a budget of 12 crores has so far made a collection of 85.40
crores! The film total returns percent so far is a
whooping 612%.

Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani which was
made lavishly on a budget of 45 crores made an income 190 crores with
a profit of 145 crores. The film's profit percentage is now marked at
322%

Star Report's Return of Investment list has
seen some considerable changes in
numbers with this. Though the
collections of YJHD surpass Aashiqui 2 by
a vast range, the profit rate of Aashiqui
2 is still double of YJHD.

films are calculated on the basis of the
film's return on investment (ROI). ROI is calculated by the number of times a
movie earns over its production and
marketing costs. Contrary to popular
belief, 100 crore club is not the index of
profit or success. But it is the ROI the film
garners that makes it lucrative of profit incurring as a venture!

Were there doubts around Farhan being the right choice for 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'?

When Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
announced 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' with Farhan Akhtar, not many were
sure too if he would be able to pull it
off. After all, he is a pucca Bombay
boy.

Since Divya Dutta, who plays his sister
in the film, is a Punjabi, one wonders
if she had to step in at times to ensure
that Farhan was doing it all perfectly
right, as far as playing a Sikh was
concerned?

"Since I belong to that culture, I was
very comfortable portraying a Sikh
woman," says Divya, "Yes, when he
was signed for the film then many did
wonder if he was the right choice.
However everyone would be quiet now because he has truly excelled in
the part."

She continues, "When I saw him on
the sets, he was out there running,
training and working hard. He used to
be the first one to get up and hit the
gym. He came with total homework
and was absolutely ready when we began shooting. He worked extra hard
on his role."

Meanwhile personally for Divya as
well, these have been great times
indeed. After delivering a sensitive
and balanced performance in Karan
Johar's 'Gippi' earlier this year, Divya
Dutta is returning to the big screen with 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'. Oh yes,
she did have a 'blink and you would
miss' role in last week's 'Lootera' but
we will let that pass!

Now one does expect that Rakeysh
Omprakash Mehra, who had given her
a key role to play in his last 'Delhi 6',
has reserved something special for
Divya in 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'.

Smiles Divya, "It is a great feeling
when someone believes in you and
picks you for something that is
different from the herd mentality.
Otherwise after 'Veer Zaara' I was
flooded with offers to play a vivacious Punjabi girl. So much so that
I was frustrated and was sick of
saying 'No'. This is where Rakeysh
came to me and said that I had to do
'Delhi 6'. It was a game changer."

Well, now that the film has already hit
the screens, it is time for audience to
pass it's verdict.

Internationally acclaimed rapper Pitbull,

Movie review: Sixteen

Cast: Izabelle Liete, Mehak Manwani, Wamiqa Gabbi, Highphill Mathew, Keith
Sequeira

Director: Raj Purohit

Star Report Rating: ***

Sometimes you go in with zero advance
knowledge of the film, and it surprises
you. Sixteen does exactly that, giving
you a bunch of mostly well-to-do Delhi-
based 16 year olds, and their brand of
confused, teenage angst, observed with a fair degree of sharpness and humour.

These are young people in 4G mode,
constantly on their cell-phones, exploring
their sexual selves, living parallel lives in
school and at home, trying to make
sense of the world around them. Tanisha
(Gabbi) lives with her youthful, single aunt, and looks upon a
slightly older man
(Sequeira) who has moved in as a tenant
with a clear-eyed amusement. "Arre,
uncle hai", she tells her pals, but the film
takes us to an interesting place between
Mehek and the said "uncle". Nidhi (Manwani) is her papa's darling and likes
to take it slow, not wanting to be
pushed into 'non-virgin-hood', just
because her pushy boyfriend can't wait.
Anu (Liete) comes from a home which
doesn't really give her a familial, comforting cushion, leaving her to fend
for herself. And Ashwin (Mathew) comes
from a slightly less well-off background,
with a father who wants him to breach
the IAS wall, regardless of the cost to his
son.

While the film does stretch, and becomes
slightly stagey in places (Ashwin's track
that takes him away from Delhi after a
tragedy, and dumps him in a place
where crime is his only recourse,
fumbles), most of Sixteen seems true to its subjects, and subject. The girls are
especially well-drawn, getting better
lines and situations than the boys/men.
And the lines seem true to life. This is
pretty much how the young are: slangy,
smart-alecky and uncaring of authority, though you do wonder if the young
female of a certain privileged metro
background should be comfortable
slinging about the word 'b---c'. Or is it
just an address, not invective?

There is heartbreak, and heartache here,
minus exaggeration. And some life-
affirming scenes, even if the film nearly
ends on a lecture about how 16-year-
olds can be the most misunderstood
breed. This Sixteen is slight, but stays fresh and honest for the most part.

Movie Review: SHORTS

Cast: Huma Qureshi, Satya Anand, Aditya Kumar, Richa Chadha, Arjun Srivastava,
Murari Kumar, Preeti Singh, Shankar
Debnath, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Aditi
Khanna, Vineet Singh, Ratnabali
Bhattacharjee

Directors: Shlok Sharma, Siddharth Gupt, Anirban Roy, Rohit Pandey, Neeraj
Ghayman

Star Report Rating: *** 1/2

Shorts is exactly that. Five short films,
wildly different in choice of story,
technique, and tone. But these films,
produced by Anurag Kashyap and Guneet
Monga, have one thing in common: they
are helmed and performed by fresh new voices and faces. If these filmmakers go
on to make features (and I know at least
one of them has completed his first),
then we are in for some good times.

Sujata has Huma Qureshi play a victim of
long abuse at the hands of a cousin. The
abuse began when she and he (Kumar)
were much younger, and Sharma shows
with economy that she has never really
been able to get away from him. It starts slow and then builds up, the older
version of the cousin played by Anand,
into a crescendo. The end is satisfying
and disturbing, and the performances are
good.

Epilogue has three characters — one
woman, two men -- occupying different
planes. If that sounds a little abstruse, it
is meant to. It reminded me a little of
the kind of psychedelic European films
that used to be made: here are the visuals, and there's your interpretation.
This one is a bit of a stretch though Richa
Chadha stands out, inviting your gaze.

Audacity takes you into a home which
has a rebellious young daughter and a
father who sits and reads a newspaper,
and a mother who is resentful, and
cooks. It is a dysfunctional family, and it
ends on a note you can see ahead. But the actors are all such a fit,
especially the
young Preeti Singh.

Nawazuddin lights up the dystopian
universe of Mehfuz, a place where
people are dying continuously of
mysterious causes, and ending up in
pyres, and graves. Nawaz's face,
smeared with dust and dirt and pain, is, as ever, a stayer.

And Shor is about a man uprooted from
his native UP trying to find his feet in
Mumbai, and struggling for a rhythm
with his wife, who has to leave the
home in order to work and feed her
family — an ever grumbling mother-in- law, jobless husband, and little boy. Both
Vineet Singh and Ratnabali
Bhattacharjee are excellent, and the
direction is assured.

They are all interesting in their ways,
but for me the ones that worked the
most were Sujata and Shor: using the
same old human conditions and feelings
and re-casting them anew makes for the
best stories.

Salman Khan's golden advice to brother Arbaaz Khan

Salman Khan is famous for helping his
friends and family. The actor is one
person who is always there to support
his family, come what may! Not many
people know that Salman motivated
Arbaaz Khan to direct Dabangg 2. And now he wants his younger brother to
carve his own niche, without the
Supertar's help.

Dabangg, which broke all the Box-Office
records, was directed by Abhinav
Kashyap. But, due to some creative
difference with the Khan brothers he
left Dabangg 2. That's when Salman told
Arbaaz to take over and direct the movie. And just like Dabangg, Dabangg
2 also did a very good business.

Now, Salman Khan has advised Arbaaz
Khan to start a new project with some
other hero. Talking about it, a source
told a leading daily, "The two have
finalised the script and the casting will
start by the end of this year. Salman told Arbaaz that he needs to find his
own space and that he won't star in his
next project."

Well, we must say that Salman is super
confident about his brother!

Nargis Fakhri to do an item number for Phata Poster Nikla Hero

From America's next top model to
Kingfisher's calendar girl, Nargis, who
made her debut alongside Bollywood
heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar,
has come a long. Though the actress has
been swamped with endorsement deals, she has been absent from the silver
screen. However, this year besides her
featuring in Madras Café alongside John
Abraham, we hear that Nargis will be
seen doing an item number in Shahid
Kapoor's next.

The film in question is the Rajkumar
Santoshi directed venture Phata Poster
Nikla Hero. Though details of the track
are being kept under wraps, the song
will be composed by Pritam, and
choreographed by Bosco-Caeser. Phata Poster Nikla Hero features Ileana D'Cruz
opposite Shahid.

Manish Jha abandons plans of making Mountain Man film

Showing a rare grace and sincerity,
filmmaker Manish Jha has decided to
abandon plans of making his bio-pic on
Dashrath Manjhi, the man who dug a
roadway out of a mountain that
separated his village in Bihar from the nearest hospital.

A few months back, Ketan Mehta
decided to make a film on the Mountain
Man with Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the
lead, precipitating a legal war with
Manish Jha and his producer who claimed
their idea had been stolen by a writer and sold to Ketan Mehta.

But now Manish sees the matter more
rationally. Says Jha, "I think it's
important that Darshrath Manjhi's story
be told. It doesn't matter who tells it. I
guess somewhere I was being egoistic
by insisting on making my own film on the subject even when I heard Ketan
was doing it. I did feel cheated because I
had started work on the subject many
years ago. However, now I see that
every story has its own destiny. If Ketan
was destined to tell Dashrath Manjhi's story, so be it."

Manish says he planned to make Manjhi's
story as a bi-lingual. "I had planned it
with Dhanush. It was going to be in
Hindi and Tamil. We were both very
excited. But then I don't know why the
delay happened. It killed my dream project. I don't blame anyone for it"

Manish blames himself for the story
leaking out. "If in my enthusiasm over
the subject I shared the idea with a
writer who passed it on to another
filmmaker, it is my fault. After all these
years, I am still a stranger to the ways of show-business. In spite of being a
filmmaker for 12 years, I still don't know
how the system works," says Manish
who in a career of 12 years as a
filmmaker has directed only two films
Matrabhoomi and Anwar.

Manish says he spent his time traveling
across India and preparing for the film
on Dashrath Manjhi. "But now I will
direct something else. I am sure Ketan
has done a fine job."

On hearing of Manish Jha's decision to
abandon the Manjhi film, Ketan Mehta
said, "I am thankful and relieved. My film
is looking good and Nawazuddin
Siddiqui has given a stupendous
performance. We complete the film in December."

Sunil Pal to show his serious side in Money Back Guarantee

Stand-up comedian Sunil Pal says his
second directorial venture Money Back
Guarantee has a social message and will
also show his serious side.

The winner of the debut season of The
Great Indian Laughter Champion, Pal made his
directorial debut with the movie titled
Bhavnaao Ko Samjho, which featured 54
stand-up comedians including Johnny
Lever, Raju Srivastava, Kapil Sharma,
Khayali, Ehsaan Qureshi, Sudesh Lahiri and Rajiv Thakur. He acted in the film
apart from directing and producing.

"We are working on my second film. It
has elements of comedy and has a social
message as well. We will more or less
repeat the same comedians as we had in
our first film Bhavnaao Ko Samjho. We
have started on the music part of the film but the shooting will begin from
August," Pal told PTI. Pal will also act in
the film and he insists audience will get
to see a different side in the film.

Apart from this film, Pal will be seen in
Hrithik Roshan starrer much awaited
superhero film Krrish 3, which is set to
release on November 4. "I have a small
role in the film. Hrithik plays a waiter in
the film and we are his regular customers. It is a funny role, beyond this
I can't talk much about this project," Pal
said.

Pal had earlier worked with Hrithik in
Krazzy 4, in which the latter performed
an item number. He had also acted in
Priyadarshan's Phir Hera Pheri alongside
Paresh Rawal,Akshay Kumar and Suniel
Shetty.

Stunt safety measures not up to international standards: Akshay Kumar

In spite of having stuntmen on hand,
actors often insist on performing their
own stunts. Hrithik Roshan just
underwent brain surgery after hurting
himself during a stunt for his next, Bang
Bang. We speak to Akshay Kumar (he too injured his foot while shooting for the
tentatively titled Pistol) about precautions and safety on the sets.

# What are the safety measures taken
while filming stunts?

When we hire a stunt team from abroad,
we realise our safety measures aren't up
to international standards. I always
check my harness before I do a stunt; I
test-drive the cars I have to race or
explode; I'm present at all pyrotechnical rehearsals; and I walk through
everything step-by-step. No man should
put their life in someone else's hands
unless they have covered their own
safety from all angles.

# With advancing technology, is it
possible to replace filming stunts with
computer-generated imagery?

Our films are advancing, but not to the
point where actors are replaced by
computer doubles, like in Hollywood
films. Most of the time, the time to
choreograph fight sequences in advance
isn't available. We tend to walk onto set, get told what to do and
choose whether
or not to do it. At times, we ask the stunt
double to perform, purely for safety
reasons. In the last five years, though,
I've seen a change, and India has finally
given safety more priority.

# You perform your own stunts. Is safety
a concern?

Of course I fear for my safety, but the
trick is to never let fear control you. Your
adrenaline helps keep you alive and stops
you from making potentially life-
threatening mistakes. The day I take
either my body or my work for granted will be the day you hear that I've
smashed every inch of myself to pieces.
In nearly 25 years of doing stunts, I made
my first real mistake recently. I've never
felt more ashamed.

# What advice would you give to fellow
action stars?

Always think twice before you decide to
do anything for a film. It may seem like a
career-changing idea, but think of your
family and your future before doing
anything risky. Train properly, because
looking strong and being strong are two different things.

Lootera Is Okay, Policegiri Is Low | 1st Week Box Office Collections

When Lootera did show good escalation over the weekend, it was expected that
weekdays would stay on to be stable.
Well, they did stay stable, but on the
lower side, as a result of which the film
collected 27 crores at the end of first week. That may have still seemed okay
had the weekend not showed good rise
in numbers. However given the fact that
the momentum didn't really stay on its
peak does give a clear indication that it's
target audience was exhausted sooner than one would have imagined.

The film is now a break even affair
though frankly, a much better verdict
was expected due to word of mouth that
had started gaining. As stated in the last
week's column though, more than
anything else the film would add a lot of credibility to all involved
though it won't
be remembered for the moolah that it
could have possibly gained.

Policegiri would be unfortunately remembered as one of those Sanjay Dutt
films that couldn't really give much fight
at the box office. Though it too had
shown some level of escalation in
momentum over the weekend, there
wasn't much to cheer about in days to come. The film continued to slide and
eventually ended it's first week around
the 14 crore mark. Again, given the action flavour of the film, more was
expected from this cop v/s goon film.
One wonders whether a better title
could have saved the day. However, that
is all left to speculation now since the
film would struggle to touch even the 20 crore mark.

Trailer Analysis: Madras Cafe

The trailer of Madras Cafe begins with a music that resounds with spookiness of
tragedy. The calamitous air introduces
this political thriller that from frame one
is hard to not immerse yourself ill.
Shoojit Sircar with Vicky Donor elaborated his prowess, and with Madras
Cafe he is all set to experiment a
paradigm shift. The film's political thriller
premise has lead actor John Abraham
playing an undercover officer in Jaffna.
Dealing with the volatile socio-political of Sri Lanka, the film must
have required
volumes of research in its conception as
well as scripting stage!

Nargis Fakhri plays the international
journalist with conviction! Blunt in her
words and fearless in her manner, she
exclaims in a scene that criticizing
national policies doesn't make her anti-
national. To quote the gist of a popular Japanese classic Rashomon, truth isn't
singular but pluralistic with its zest
differing as per perceptions and values.

Created on the background of Civil War
with guerrilla forces descending, the
pulsating factor here is engaging. With
declaration of Code Red, the calamity
factor multiples and the trailer could only
make you want to watch the film even more.

Slated for a release on 23rd August,
Madras Cafe will unravel the mysteries
of a troubled story that remains
marginalized, ostracized and untold!

Shahrukh Khan Movie ‘Happy New Year’ New Role as Psycho Lover

ChennaiExpress he will be playing the role of a psycho lover in Happy
New Year.

Ever since his role in Dilwale Dulhaniya
Le JayengeI (1995), SRK has been known
as the passionate lover, therefore
always maintaining a romantic image on
the big screen. Now, director of the new
film, Farah Khan, wants the King of Romance to play a lover with a twist.

Star Report reported that since Shahrukh Khan has his priorities on
Chennai Express, newly born AbRam and
recovering from his shoulder surgery.
The filming for Happy New Year was
supposed to start June 2013 but will now
be postponed to being in September 2013.

Farah Khan has also finalized the leading
lady for the film, a young newcomer in
her 20's. The young starlet will be seen
as a bar dancer from Bhandup.

Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani Crosses The 190 Crore Mark | Box Office

After running in the theaters for over a
month, all time blockbuster film Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani has finally
crossed the 190 crore mark. With its total collections so resting at
190.03 crores at the domestic box office, the film is so far
the year's biggest grosser. The film is still
short of matching up to the lifetime
earnings of Salman Khan's Ek Tha Tiger and Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots which seems
almost an impossibility now.

However, the Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika
Padukone starrer can still claim to the
new age Bollywood film that acquired a
larger than life demeanor at the box
office after a long dry spell. The film
after running blazingly for many weeks finally slowed down after the release of
films like Raanjhanaa and Fukrey which fragmented the film's target audiences!

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag Has A Decent Opening Day Occupancy | Box Office

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag on the Flying
Sikh, Milkha Singh shoots off to fair start at
the box office on its opening day. The
film opened to an average occupancy of 40%-45% in the urban centers
and multiplexes.

Usually the premise is something that
lacks mass appeal, but the film with
great reviews from critics and good box
office boost at the on start is expected to
fare well. The film's stronghold circuit is
North India where it showed a promising beginning, especially in East
Punjab.

Made on a lavish budget, the film's box
office numbers have to be stellar to
recover its investment. The initial push
in terms of figures is fantastic, but
targeted mainly at the multiplex
audiences, the film has to increase the pace of its earning to level the money
input in it.

Aashiqui 2: 11th Week Box Office Collections

Aashiqui 2 refuses to get mellow despite performing tirelessly for almost 11
weeks. The film that became a rage in
the mass market with single screens
earning good profits off it, even at the
conclusion of of its 11 week run at the
box office has managed to rise its amount. Aashiqui 2's total collections at
the domestic box office is now market at 85.40 crores.

With the highest profit percentage of
any film in 2013, Aashiqui 2 has
overwhelmed the general masses
unanimously. The onscreen chemistry of
Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor
is continuing to mesmerize audiences even now, and might even run at select
single screens across the country for a
while longer before wrapping up its
lifetime income.

Felt liberated to work with SRK and Rohit: Deepika

Deepika Padukone, who is cherishing the
success of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is
thrilled about the response she is getting
for Chennai Express. The actress claims
that she enjoyed every bit of shoot with
SRK and Rohit Shetty.

On being asked about her experience
during Chennai Express, Deepika said, "I
felt extremely liberated as an actress
with Rohit Shetty and SRK around.

"The fun that I had as an actress on the
film you can see in the film. It feels the
same to work with SRK," claimed
Deepika.

When asked about her memorable scene
in the film, Deepika said, "There is one
scene in the film when SRK kicks the
chappal on my face. It's one of the most
memorable scenes and when you will see
the film you will enjoy it." Deepika entered B-town with Shahrukh's Om
Shanti Om and later there was no looking
back for the lady. daily times monitor

No one has been finalized for Imtiaz's film: says producer

For some time now there have been
speculations as to who will be the female
lead in director Imtiaz Ali's next. There
were rumours that Deepika Padukone
was signed for this role. But it seems that
the news is untrue.

When asked if Deepika has been signed
for the movie, producer Sajid Nadiadwala
denied it saying, "No one has been
finalised."

Imitiaz Ali has worked before with
Deepika Padukone in 'Love Aaj Kal'. Well,
as for this movie, we just need to wait
some more for some confirmation, it
seems!

Krish to direct Telugu flick before 'Gabbar'

Director Krish, who
was set to team up with Akshay
Kumar for upcoming Bollywood film
"Gabbar", will direct an untitled
Telugu film before he starts working
for the Hindi project, says a source from the industry.

"Gabbar" will be the Hindi remake of
Tamil blockbuster "Ramana", directed
by A.R. Murugadoss. Akshay Kumar is
currently busy shooting for Hindi
remake of Tamil film "Thuppakki".

"He is directing Varun Tej in his debut
film, which is expected to go on floors
in August. It will be a quick project as
he plans to wrap it up in two months
so that he can be prepared for
"Gabbar", which is expected to go on floors towards the end of this year or
early 2014," the source told IANS.

Varun Tej is the son of Telugu actor
Naga Babu, who is the younger
brother of megastar Chiranjeevi. "The script Krish has for Varun will be
an out-and-out action entertainer. He
is going out of his way to give the
perfect launch pad for the actor," the
source added.

Krish, who is known for directing
films such as "Vedam" and "Krishnam
Vande Jagatgurum", is also expected
to team up with Mahesh Babu soon.

"Mahesh's project will go on floors
next year after he completes his film
with Srinu Vaitla. The film has not
been shelved but it has only been
delayed," said the source.

Mahesh Babu, who is busy wrapping
up Telugu action-thriller "1:
Nenokkadine", will team up with
Srinu Vaitla for "Aagadu" soon. Mahesh's project with Krish is titled
"Shivam", and features Sonakshi
Sinha in the lead.

Varun Dhawan to be like Salman Khan in his next!

The Student Of The Year debutant Varun Dhawan is getting ready for his
next, Main Tera Hero, to be directed by none other than his own father
David Dhawan. If Varun is excited about the film, papa David wants him
to be as spontaneous on camera as Salman Khan.

Main Tera Hero is an official remake of South masala hit Kandireega
(2011) starring Ram. Naturally, Varun is required
to look and act like a mass hero, and who better than Salman Khan to
seek inspiration from. Incidentally, David has directed Salman in many
films, and admires the actor for his spontaneity and gut. So it's
obvious that papa dear wants his sonny to follow in the footsteps of
the blockbuster star.

[[ Movie Review: Bhag Milkha
Bhag- www.bollywoodstarreport.blogspot.com/2013/07/movie-review-bhag-milkha-bhag.html?m=1
]]

David admits that his son will take the spontaneous stance for the
movie. David says, as a director he is giving Varun a free hand to
interpret his role the way he wants to. But why does he want Varun to
emulate Salman Khan? "If you see Salman in my films, you'll find a lot
of 'Salmanisms' in the characters. I want Varun to strive for the same
kind of unrehearsed performance," David Dhawan is quoted as saying.

[[ Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan,
Aamir Khan or Hrithik Roshan:
Who's B-town's biggest crowd
puller?- www.bollywoodstarreport.blogspot.com/2013/07/shahrukh-khan-salman-khan-aamir-khan-or.html?m=1
]]

Too excited to direct his own son, David will start the movie this
month. Later, the shoot will progress in places like Ooty, Bangalore,
Mumbai and then in Bangkok. In the movie, Varun Dhawan will be seen
romancing Nargis Fakhri and Ileana D'Cruz.

That's quite a sizzling cast!

Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan or Hrithik Roshan: Who’s B-town’s biggest crowd puller?

In India, superstars define the psyche of
an era. And those who manage to carve
a distinctive image that reflects the
mood of their times end up being at the
top. Here's looking at the stars who
have managed to create a huge fan following amongst the masses and
classes alike…

There are stars and there are superstars.
And what's the one thing that separates
them? It's the X-factor. And the X-factor
cannot be quantified or explained – it
could be a larger than life image like
Salman Khan, a charismatic and charming personality like Shahrukh Khan
or the perfectionist streak like Aamir Khan that could draw them to
their favourite star.

Then a huge number of fans come
thronging to their house, start mauling
their car, begin doting on every move
they make and last but not the least rush
to the theatres in larger numbers to
watch them on the big screen. We take a look at Hindi cinema's greatest crowd-
pullers and what makes them special.

Action safer outside India, says John Abraham

Bollywood actor John Abraham, who has
performed daredevil stunts in movies
like Force, Shootout at Wadala and
upcoming Madras Cafe, feels that doing
action is much safer outside India.

"For Madras Cafe, we have shot the
action sequences in Thailand and Malaysia. We heroes need
to be more safer while doing action. I've
broken all my bones. As an actor we are
suppose to be fit and fine. We need to be
more protective and I am ensure safety
measures are taken," he told reporters at the the first look launch of
Madras Cafe
reacting to Hrithik Roshan's head injury
while doing stunts for Bang Bang.

"I am happy that he is doing fine. Thank
God, he is recovering. I feel doing stunts
is safer outside than in India," John said.

Hrithik was suffering from Subdural
Hematoma caused in the brain as a result
of the head injury. He successfully
underwent a brain surgery to remove a
two-month-old clot on Sunday.

Movie Review: Bhag Milkha Bhag

Rating: 4/5 stars (Four Stars)

Star cast: Farhan Akhtar, Sonam Kapoor, Divya Dutta, Pavan Malhotra,
Yograj Singh, Rebecca Breeds

Director: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra

What's Good:
From story, to acting, to screenplay, to direction; this one indeed
is picture perfect!

What's Bad:
Even if there was something, it was quite easy to miss
those glitches!

Loo break: That would be a terrible mistake!

Watch or Not?:

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is one of those rare films which are hard to
forget long after you are done with
them. This Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
biopic based on the magnetic life of
athlete Milkha Singh, is all about pluses
that champions the spirit of human living! Watch it for Farhan Akhtar who
impeccably replicates the soul of Milkha
Singh and leaves you with goosebumps!

User Rating:

The film is a story of Flying Singh, Milkha
Singh and his journey from his run for a
glass of milk to becoming India's pride
on international athletic platforms.
Tainted with battered past, bruised with
horrific memories of Partition and later petty crime, his lady love
helped him get
focus in life. The evolution of an urchin
boy to the man who won laurels for his
nation will have you awestruck! Travel
through the life of one of India's most
notable sports figures and get inspired to take the plunge for life's run more
seriously than ever.

Script Analysis:

The film is an intelligently disguised
story of a man whom history cannot faze
out easily. Milkha Singh's life story has
the right ingredients for a clever biopic
which Prasoon Joshi and Rakeysh
Omprakash Mehra have executed with delectable imagination. At no point does
the film scatter in terms of story or
intention, steering close to the relevant
facts. Mehra rightfully reuses his Rang De
Basanti style of narration which works
to enhance the film's tempo by absorbing your attention into it even
more.

The story's melodrama is restricted,
keeping the dramatic bits plain. It is
painful to see the Partition sequences of
the story which have been carried out
remarkably. In a particular sequence,
where the young Milkha Singh slips on a puddle of blood after his
entire 'pind' has
been wiped off is the most fearsome
portrayal of wretchedness! The story's
tainted scenes weave the haunting air
fantastically and yet the cherishable
moments maintain the story's sheen. A couple of scenes are beyond the
dimensions of cinematic marvel and
ooze innocence wrapped in simplistic
story telling!

From the glee of getting his first India
blazer to when he loses the qualifying
match in Melbourne to when he breaks
down crying the pent up tears of years ,
the story's terrain is smartly packed with
judicious amounts of highs and lows, making the film's recipe flawless.

Star Performances:

Farhan Akhtar has immersed in himself
the soul of Milkha Singh. Giving the best
work of his career, he is resplendent as
Milkha Singh. He brings out Milkha's
vulnerability with charm and his passion
with force. There is comfortable and effortless energy Farhan infuses in his
role which makes me sure no one could
have played it better than him. The actor
will impress you with the work he has
done in his physique. He has drawn a
believable, grounded and exemplary picture of a man whose story people are
less fluent with. With this unblemished
portrayal, Farhan will astound you!

Sonam Kapoor has a lovely tinge in her
little role in her limited screen time, she
will flatter you enough that you actually
feel bad that Milkha and Biro eventually
part ways!

Divya Dutta plays Farhan's older sister
spotlessly well. A pillar of support and
maternal love, she plays helplessness
with command. A victim of domestic
violence and marital rape, she paints the
hues of her character commendably.

Pavan Malhotra shines through every
scene with a first rate work and amazes
you with his easy confidence.

Direction, Music and Technical Aspects:

After Delhi 6, Mehra faced a stark low
and with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag he makes
up as he has easily surpassed the high of
Rang De Basanti too. His homage to the
forgotten hero is an epic, with him
caressing every detail with research and fondling every emotion through the
film's journey with tenderness. His
storytelling still has the sparkling vision
and his style has the ability to keep you
latched to the screens.

The story's strength is in its reality and
Prasoon Joshi has ensured that the
screenplay rightfully fits in every bit
coherently. The editing is so lucid that
the 3 hour plus runtime isn't tedious at
any point. Joshi-Mehra with their skilled craftsmanship has weaved a tapestry of
sheer compelling genius out of the life of
a celebrated yesteryear sports
personality!

The background score by Shankar-
Ehsaan-Loy in wonderful and O Rangrezz
croons with beauty!

The Last Word:

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag will have you
captivated with its grit and enigma.
Made with panache, it's hard to take
your eyes off Farhan Akhtar, who
enriches Milkha Singh as a surreal
charismatic figure beyond the realms of flesh and blood! I am going with a 4/5
and applause for the film's team. This
one is so moving and scintillating that
such films are a reward to the audiences
for bearing through the fiascoes!

watching Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

I try to re-invent myself with every number: Prabhu Deva

Prabhu Deva refuses to look back to the misfortunes of life and says
the only thing that matters to him now is his movies.

# Unlike your previous films, Ramaiyya Vastavaiyya doesn't boast of
A-listers like an Akshay Kumar or a Salman Khan.
You are introducing Kumar Taurani's son Girish Kumar. Are you worried
about the box-office reception?

I am quite tensed as we are launching a newcomer. It's a question of
his career. As much as the box-office reception of the film is
bothering me, the buzz created is something that has made me
optimistic. Thankfully, the promotions are going well, and even the
songs seem to have caught up.

# Your films, which are generally formulaic, almost never get any
critical acclaim. Does that bother you?

So what? Everybody from actors to producers to technicians who work on
my films are extremely happy with me, and that's what matters the
most. It is their hard work and faith, which gets rewarded at the
box-office. Critics are entitled to their opinion, but they rarely
affect the way I approach my work.

# In comparative terms, where do you think Bollywood scores over the
Southernfilm industry?

Well, both the industries are growing at an exponential pace. I'm glad
to be a successful part of both. In Bollywood, we've started
announcing the release date way in advance; something that doesn't
quite happen in the South. It reflects a disciplinary attitude, which
is a very healthy trend.

# What's this fascination for grabbing the sleeve or the collar of
your shirt while dancing? Is that your signature move?

(Laughs) Honestly, it is not a very conscious move. You are pointing
out the collar and sleeve, but there are many more things I hold on
to! There's nothing as a 'Prabhu Deva signature move'. I try
to re-invent myself with every number.

# Your marriage wasn't successful. Your relationship with Nayanthara
went kaput. How has that affected the artiste in you?

There are ups and downs in everybody's life and mine is not an
exception. You have to move on, keep the focus on your work and try to
be as happy as you can be despite the personal troubles. As long as my
films are working, I am more than happy.

# But does immersing yourself in work really help you forget your
personal upheavals?

Honestly, it doesn't. But it is perhaps the best alternative. I love
my work more than anything, but is that an answer for my problems? No,
it isn't. Whenever something personal bothers me, I tell myself to
take it easy, keep smiling, and be happy. So far, this mantra has
worked.

Don 3 To Start By September 2013!

Yes, you heard it right! If sources are
to be believed then Farhan Akhtar is
going to start to work on the
concluding part of the Don series, i.e.,
Don 3! Farhan Akhtar has already
spoke to co-producer Ritesh Sidhwani about the whole project including the
script and will start working on its
pre-production duties once Bhaag
Milkha Bhaag releases on the 12th of
July this year.

Shah Rukh Khan has already given the
nod for the 3rd part of the Don series
and once he is free from all the
promotional campaigns for his
upcoming release Chenai Express,
which is to release on 8th August this year and is directed by Rohit Shetty,
also starring Deepika Padukone.

The source said," At the moment
both the actor and director are
busy with their upcoming films,
but once Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and
Chenaai Express are done with,
the work for Don 3 will begin in full flow. Shah Rukh has read the
script once and loved it instantly."

Even though Shah Rukh has prior
commitments regarding Farah Khan's
Happy New Year for which he works
next, the excitement for Don 3 might
make him want to switch both the
films. Anyway, let us see how things work out!

operates just like any corporate

No Size-Zero For Huma Qureshi ?

Last seen in Ekta Kapoor's 'Ek Thi
Daayan', the curvier Huma Qureshi
feels Size Zero is not her cup of tea.

Three-film-old Huma Qureshi, who has
managed to garner equal adulation
and flak for her curves in the size-
zero-obsessed industry, prefers to be
her pretty self rather than falling for
the fad.

Huma was loved for her voluptuous
figure and earthy style in her first
movie 'Gangs of Wasseypur'. But she
was criticized by some quarters for
her weight issues.

"In 'Gangs of Wasseypur' I was
the pretty girl, it was glamorous
role. In 'Ek Thi Daayan' I was the
heroine. I have always been the
pretty girl".

I think there are people who have
a craze about size zero but today
we do have heroines who are
curvier, " Huma said in an
interview.

"Either you think of it (weight) as
a problem or as an added
advantage. I would like to be
known for my personality rather
than size zero, I am an actress. I
don't want to be a hanger, " she said.

Well, can this be a dig at the hot babe
Kareena Kapoor who brought this
trend in Bollywood ?

5 Point Review For Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

I just happened to catch the premier
show of Farhan Akhtar's Bhaag Milkha
Bhaag which releases tomorrow, so
here's what I thought about the biopic
in five points.

1. The reason why there were sky high expectations from Bhaag Milkha
Bhaag was that this year none of the proclaimed superstars of
Bollywood (except perhaps Akshay's Special Chabbis) will deliver
anything that is expected to be an exceptional cinematic experience,
i.e., critically. That along with Rakeysh Omprash Mehra's return after
the forgettable Delhi 6 and of course Farhan Akhtar! Even though I
just cannot say i am disappointed, I can't say I was mesmerized as
well.

2. The story which stretches from 1947 to 1960, traces Milkha Singh's
life from his early days to the time he was 25 years old. When Milkha
decides not to run in the 'Peace Games' between India and Pakistan,
everyone including Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is confused as to why?
Thus, his initial trainer or Guruji, played by Pawan Malhotra recites
the tale of the Flying Sikh during a long train journey to Chandigarh.

3. Farhan Akhtar is the sole reason to blindly go to the theaters and
watch the movie. His physique, his style and his conviction towards
the character is overwhelming. There's no questioning his resemblance
to the legendary sprinter. Almost certain to get the filmfare award
this year I guess.

4. The rest of the performances in the movie are rather average to be
honest. They say Sonam charged just Rs 11 for the movie, and I think
the brevity of her role would have anyway amounted to that only. Dilip
Tahil as Jawaharlal Nehru has no charisma whatsoever and Yograj
Singh(Yuvraj's Father) who's the national coach chips in with a good
performance. Divya Dutta too is not anything super! So many
characters, yes the movie is definitely LONG!

5. The background score is extremely disappointing, especially in the
first half and honestly the scenes apart from the ones which were
related to the races aren't good enough to give the whole 'EPIC!'
feeling. Mehra does well but not great and so do Shankar Ehsaan and
Loy!

Still, it is definitely a must watch film, there is no doubt about
that. But apart from FARHAN AKHTAR, is there anything else in the film
worthy of getting the 4.5 -5 stars it has been getting? I don't think
so!

3.5/5 For Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. A well made film which tastes great just
because of its main ingredient! Plus Rebecca Breeds ♥ !

P.S.- You would surely want to run on the treadmill after watching
Farhan's Muscles!

Celebs welcome Shahrukh Khan's baby boy AbRam

Shahrukh Khan and Gauri Khan became parents to a baby boy, whom they
have named AbRam! AbRam was born on May 27 at
Masrani Hospital and was then taken to
Nanavati and Breach Candy Hospital as he
was a premature baby, before he was
brought home. SRK made the happy
announcement through a statement thereby clarifying all the controversies
about the new born.

"Amidst all the noise that has been going
around, the sweetest is the one made by
our new-born baby, AbRam. He was born
prematurely by several months but has
finally come home. Gauri and our whole
family have been dealing with his health issues for quite some time now. As a
family our silence on this subject has
been because of the personal nature of
emotional strife that we have been going
through due to his health," said SRK in his
statement. Here's what Badshah's best pals and well-wishers wrote:

Karan Johar: AbRam is the most beautiful
child I have seen

Abhishek Bachchan: Many many
congratulations to @iamsrk and Gauri for
the arrival of little AbRam. Lots and lots
of love.

Shobhaa De: Welcome to the world
AbRam! I love the significance and
symbolism of the name. Congratulations,
parents!

Anjana Sukhani: Super congratulations
for the little bundle of joy .....stay blessed
alwayz @iamsrk

Chennai Express song Kashmir main tu Kanyakumari: Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone dance like no one’s watching

The song is super colourful as vibrant
Kathakali dancers groove in the
background and Deepika appears in her
bright lehengas and lungis

Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone's new song Kasmhmir main tu
Kanyakumari from Chennai Express is not exactly the kind of number that
amazes you. It's fun and goofy, and if you
are with a set of mad friends, you can
always turn this track on and indulge in
some mindless banter.

What caught our attention are the
wonderful hues. From the costumes to
the locations – everything is so bright –
not in a jarring but in mood uplifting
kinda way. We like Deepika's spirited
attitude in the song – there's a spring in every step. And SRK is as
always high on
energy. We also like the 'singing in the
open jeep' idea- very retro. The old school
effect is something we totally approve
of. The flavour of Chennai is captured in
an absolute filmi ishtyle, with SRK and Dippy going all ballistic in a playful
manner –very cool we say!

Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor get cozy in Ibiza

A photograph speaks a thousand words. This photo of Ranbir Kapoor and
Katrina Kaif clicked during their vacation in the holiday hotspot
Ibiza leaves little to be said.

The lovebirds were spotted getting cozy at a David Guetta concert at
the Mediterranean island, known for its resorts, tourist spots,
eateries and electronic music. Casually dressed for a fun outing in
summery Ibiza, Ranbir was seen putting his arms around Katrina's
waist, a clear gesture that their friendship has entered a new
terrain.

This photo, shared on Twitter by a fan, also puts to rest the rumours
of a possible crack in Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif relationship.

The talk of the duo planning a vacation in Spain has been doing the
rounds for some time, but the two slipped out of Mumbai very smoothly
last week, without giving anyone a whiff of their romantic getaway.
Ayan Mukerji, a good friend of Ranbir and director of Yeh Jawaani Hai
Deewani, was also with them at Ibiza.

Ahead, catch more photos of Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif from Ibiza.
They can give paparazzi a slip, but the fans love them too much to not
notice.
