Yesterday, i.e. on 19th July, 2013,
Hindi Cinema witnessed two releases
- 'Ramaiya Vastavaiya' and 'D-Day'.
The common thing between these
two movies is the leading female
actor Shruti Haasan. While she is playing the love interest of debutante
Girish Taurani in Prabhudeva's rom-
com 'Ramaiya Vastavaiya', Kamal
Haasan's daughter will be seen in the
role of a prostitute in Nikhil Advani's
intense crime drama 'D-Day'.
Shruti's characters in both the movies
are poles apart and she has already
been getting rave reviews for her
performances. But this is not the first
time that Bollywood has seen two
movie releases of one actor on the same day. Any actor would never
want such a scenario but it happens
under unavoidable circumstances.
Mentioned below are two major
instances that come to my mind,
when Hindi Cinema has seen simultaneous releases of the same
actor.
1.) Juhi Chawla ('Deewana Mastana' and 'Mr. And Mrs. Khiladi') - On
October 10, 1997 Bollywood
witnessed two big releases with
common leading actress as well as
director. This was a unique case when
two Juhi Chawla starrers, 'Deewana
Mastana' and 'Mr. And Mrs. Khiladi', directed by comedy King David
Dhawan released on the same day.
Juhi was the leading lady opposite
Govinda and Anil Kapoor in 'Deewana
Mastana', while she shared screen
space for the first and last time opposite Akshay Kumar in 'Mr. And
Mrs. Khiladi'. While 'Deewana
Mastana' went on to become a
runaway hit at the box office, 'Mr. And
Mrs. Khiladi' remained average.
2.) Sanjay Dutt('All The Best' and 'Blue') - On October 16, 2009 i.e.
during Diwali period, two biggies
starring Sanjay Dutt released on the
same day. Sanju was seen in a comic
role with Ajay Devgn and Fardeen
Khan in Rohit Shetty's "All The Best'
while he portrayed a tough character opposite Akshay Kumar in sea
adventure 'Blue'. 'All The Best'
became a hit at the box-office while
'Blue' remained average.
Apart from these instances, two
movies directed by seasoned director
Priyadarshan - 'Garam Masala' and
'Kyonki' - collided on the same day
during Diwali 2005 (November 2,
2005). While the comedy caper 'Garam Masala' starring Akshay
Kumar and John Abraham became an
instant hit, critically acclaimed Salman Khan-Kareena Kapoor starrer
'Kyonki' could not make a mark at the
ticket window.
For the character actors like Anupam
Kher, Paresh Rawal, Amrish Puri,
Prakash Raj, Johny Lever etc. this kind
of situation is a common thing but for
main leads it does come as a surprise.
Do share if you are aware of any such
scenarios in the comments section
below. Stay tuned to Unknown Facts
section for never heard of updates.
