Pran, one of Bollywood's most respected actors, died in Mumbai's Lilavati
Hospital today. He was 93 and had been
admitted to hospital a month ago.
He died after a spell of prolonged illness,"
his daughter Pinky told news agency PTI.
"He was not keeping well, he was very
weak. His health was deteriorating," she
added.
Pran received the Dadasaheb Phalke
Award this year in May. He was unable to
travel to Delhi to receive the award at the
presentation ceremony because of ill
health. He was given the award at his
home in Mumbai the next day.
Pran, star of films such as Zanjeer and Amar Akbar Anthony , began his
career as a hero in Punjabi films, made a
tremendous impact on Bollywood as the
villain in Dilip Kumar's Ram Aur Shyam and was the first actor to break
stereotype by playing character roles as
well. In the '70s, there was almost no
major film that did not feature Pran and
he was often higher paid than the hero.
Pran was credited with making the role of the villain as important as
the hero's, and
was known for his sophistication and style
on screen.
Pran was also credited with helping actor
Amitabh Bachchan get his biggest break - Zanjeer, which marked the
rise of the Angry Young Man and made Amitabh
Bachchan famous. Pran played one of his
best known roles - the Pathan Sher Khan -
in Zanjeer. He and Amitabh Bachchan formed a long and successful screen
partnership after Zanjeer and struck up a lifelong friendship. Pran
made one of his
last public appearances at Amitabh

Arshad Warsi returns to choreographing after 20 years
Before he became an actor, Arshad Warsi was a choreographer -- and
he returns to choreographing after 20
years with his forthcoming film Calling Mr Joe B Carvalho in which he
directs a song.
Arshad says dance is his passion.
"I am enjoying it and it feels good.
Dancing is my passion and I enjoy dancing.
It has been ages since I did my kind of
dance. So I am enjoying it now. I have
done the choreography, movements, and
body language," the 45-year-old said.
Calling Mr. Joe B Carvalho is a comedy that also stars Shakti Kapoor,
Soha Ali Khan,
Geeta Basra and Javed Jaffrey, among
others.
Arshad, who made his acting debut in
1996 with Tere Mere Sapne, now hopes to choreograph at least one song in each of
his films.
"I felt I won't be able to do it. But now I
feel like choreographing at least one song
in every film like Prabhudheva," he said. Arshad used to choreograph
for plays and
jazz performances and accepts that dance
today has completely changed. However,
it is not tough to adapt to the current
trend.
"I had never done film songs, I used to do
English, modern jazz and plays. I did just
one film, the title credit role track of Roop Ki Raani Choron Ka Raja.

happens today is completely different,"
Arshad said.
"But if you are a dancer, then it is not
tough to adapt. A dancer is a dancer. if I
can do jazz, then I can also do modern
jazz, break and Hindi dance also. Give me
anything, I can even do Bharatnatyam if
taught," he added.
In 1991, Arshad won the Indian dance
competition and later went on to bag the
fourth prize in the modern jazz category in
1992 World Dance championship held in
London.
He even opened a dance school called Awesome .

A spy thriller, the film is a story based on
the political relations between India and
Sri Lanka and it releases on August 23.
The other two big films releasing next
month are Chennai Express (on August 8 - Eid) and Once Upon Ay Time in

"Holidays do get you a good opening but
at the end of the day, the content, quality
of the film will speak. We are confident
about our film and its release date. We
wanted a clear open window and we
have got that. It is a clutter breaker film, it is a very special
project... we have spent
six-seven years on it," John said.
"We want to make entertaining films with
strong content. We want to make quality
films," he said.
There were reports that the film has a
reference to Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's
assassination and also deals with the
LTTE's activities in Sri Lanka.
"The film has no such depictions. The
backdrop of the film is India-Sri Lanka and
after that the entire story is fictional. It is
a realistic film. I'm satisfied with the final
cut," director Shoojit Sircar said.
Alia Bhatt to walk the ramp for jewellery brand at bridal week
Fashion Week (IBFW) ramp for jewellery
brand Azva by World Gold Council.
The forthcoming six-day fashion
extravaganza will start from July 23 at The
Grand Hotel in south Delhi. Alia, 20, will
walk on the ramp on the event's last day.
The brand's collection revolves around the
theme of wedding.
"Every design has been made keeping in
mind the bride who is modern and
contemporary in style. Alia Bhatt
resonates the designs extremely well. She
is young, vivacious and is the perfect fit
for what we are trying to communicate," Vipin Sharma, director-jewellery, World
Gold Council (India) Private Limited, said.

Alia, daughter of veteran filmmaker

Movie review: Sixteen

Sometimes you go in with zero advance
knowledge of the film, and it surprises
you. Sixteen does exactly that, giving
you a bunch of mostly well-to-do Delhi-
based 16 year olds, and their brand of
confused, teenage angst, observed with a fair degree of sharpness and humour.
These are young people in 4G mode,
constantly on their cell-phones, exploring
their sexual selves, living parallel lives in
school and at home, trying to make
sense of the world around them. Tanisha
(Gabbi) lives with her youthful, single aunt, and looks upon a
slightly older man
(Sequeira) who has moved in as a tenant
with a clear-eyed amusement. "Arre,
uncle hai", she tells her pals, but the film
takes us to an interesting place between
Mehek and the said "uncle". Nidhi (Manwani) is her papa's darling and likes
to take it slow, not wanting to be
pushed into 'non-virgin-hood', just
because her pushy boyfriend can't wait.
Anu (Liete) comes from a home which
doesn't really give her a familial, comforting cushion, leaving her to fend
for herself. And Ashwin (Mathew) comes
from a slightly less well-off background,
with a father who wants him to breach
the IAS wall, regardless of the cost to his
son.
While the film does stretch, and becomes
slightly stagey in places (Ashwin's track
that takes him away from Delhi after a
tragedy, and dumps him in a place
where crime is his only recourse,
fumbles), most of Sixteen seems true to its subjects, and subject. The girls are
especially well-drawn, getting better
lines and situations than the boys/men.
And the lines seem true to life. This is
pretty much how the young are: slangy,
smart-alecky and uncaring of authority, though you do wonder if the young
female of a certain privileged metro
background should be comfortable
slinging about the word 'b---c'. Or is it
just an address, not invective?
There is heartbreak, and heartache here,
minus exaggeration. And some life-
affirming scenes, even if the film nearly
ends on a lecture about how 16-year-
olds can be the most misunderstood
breed. This Sixteen is slight, but stays fresh and honest for the most part.

technique, and tone. But these films,
produced by Anurag Kashyap and Guneet
Monga, have one thing in common: they
are helmed and performed by fresh new voices and faces. If these filmmakers go
on to make features (and I know at least
one of them has completed his first),
then we are in for some good times.
Sujata has Huma Qureshi play a victim of
long abuse at the hands of a cousin. The
abuse began when she and he (Kumar)
were much younger, and Sharma shows
with economy that she has never really
been able to get away from him. It starts slow and then builds up, the older
version of the cousin played by Anand,
into a crescendo. The end is satisfying
and disturbing, and the performances are
good.
Epilogue has three characters — one
woman, two men -- occupying different
planes. If that sounds a little abstruse, it
is meant to. It reminded me a little of
the kind of psychedelic European films
that used to be made: here are the visuals, and there's your interpretation.
This one is a bit of a stretch though Richa
Chadha stands out, inviting your gaze.
Audacity takes you into a home which
has a rebellious young daughter and a
father who sits and reads a newspaper,
and a mother who is resentful, and
cooks. It is a dysfunctional family, and it
ends on a note you can see ahead. But the actors are all such a fit,
especially the
young Preeti Singh.
Nawazuddin lights up the dystopian
universe of Mehfuz, a place where
people are dying continuously of
mysterious causes, and ending up in
pyres, and graves. Nawaz's face,
smeared with dust and dirt and pain, is, as ever, a stayer.
And Shor is about a man uprooted from
his native UP trying to find his feet in
Mumbai, and struggling for a rhythm
with his wife, who has to leave the
home in order to work and feed her
family — an ever grumbling mother-in- law, jobless husband, and little boy. Both
Vineet Singh and Ratnabali
Bhattacharjee are excellent, and the
direction is assured.
They are all interesting in their ways,
but for me the ones that worked the
most were Sujata and Shor: using the
same old human conditions and feelings
and re-casting them anew makes for the
best stories.

Shahrukh Khan mesmerized with Casablanca weather
Shahrukh Khan is currently spending time in Casablanca in Morocco.
The 'King Khan' also talked about the awesome weather conditions of
the place and showed love towards his work.

be told. It doesn't matter who tells it. I
guess somewhere I was being egoistic
by insisting on making my own film on the subject even when I heard Ketan
was doing it. I did feel cheated because I
had started work on the subject many
years ago. However, now I see that
every story has its own destiny. If Ketan
was destined to tell Dashrath Manjhi's story, so be it."

story as a bi-lingual. "I had planned it
with Dhanush. It was going to be in
Hindi and Tamil. We were both very
excited. But then I don't know why the

Stand-up comedian Sunil Pal says his
second directorial venture Money Back
Guarantee has a social message and will
also show his serious side.
The winner of the debut season of The
Great Indian Laughter Champion, Pal made his
directorial debut with the movie titled
Bhavnaao Ko Samjho, which featured 54
stand-up comedians including Johnny
Lever, Raju Srivastava, Kapil Sharma,
Khayali, Ehsaan Qureshi, Sudesh Lahiri and Rajiv Thakur. He acted in the film
apart from directing and producing.
"We are working on my second film. It
has elements of comedy and has a social

own stunts. Hrithik Roshan just
underwent brain surgery after hurting
himself during a stunt for his next, Bang
Bang. We speak to Akshay Kumar (he too injured his foot while shooting for the
tentatively titled Pistol) about precautions and safety on the sets.
# What are the safety measures taken
while filming stunts?
When we hire a stunt team from abroad,
we realise our safety measures aren't up
to international standards. I always
check my harness before I do a stunt; I
test-drive the cars I have to race or
explode; I'm present at all pyrotechnical rehearsals; and I walk through
everything step-by-step. No man should
put their life in someone else's hands
unless they have covered their own
safety from all angles.
# With advancing technology, is it
possible to replace filming stunts with
computer-generated imagery?
Our films are advancing, but not to the
point where actors are replaced by
computer doubles, like in Hollywood
films. Most of the time, the time to
choreograph fight sequences in advance
isn't available. We tend to walk onto set, get told what to do and
choose whether
or not to do it. At times, we ask the stunt
double to perform, purely for safety
reasons. In the last five years, though,
I've seen a change, and India has finally
given safety more priority.
# You perform your own stunts. Is safety
a concern?
Of course I fear for my safety, but the
trick is to never let fear control you. Your
adrenaline helps keep you alive and stops
you from making potentially life-
threatening mistakes. The day I take
either my body or my work for granted will be the day you hear that I've
smashed every inch of myself to pieces.
In nearly 25 years of doing stunts, I made
my first real mistake recently. I've never
felt more ashamed.

Krish to direct Telugu flick before 'Gabbar'
was set to team up with Akshay
Kumar for upcoming Bollywood film
"Gabbar", will direct an untitled
Telugu film before he starts working
for the Hindi project, says a source from the industry.
"Gabbar" will be the Hindi remake of
Tamil blockbuster "Ramana", directed
by A.R. Murugadoss. Akshay Kumar is
currently busy shooting for Hindi
remake of Tamil film "Thuppakki".
"He is directing Varun Tej in his debut
film, which is expected to go on floors
in August. It will be a quick project as
he plans to wrap it up in two months
so that he can be prepared for
"Gabbar", which is expected to go on floors towards the end of this year or
early 2014," the source told IANS.
Varun Tej is the son of Telugu actor
Naga Babu, who is the younger
brother of megastar Chiranjeevi. "The script Krish has for Varun will be
an out-and-out action entertainer. He
is going out of his way to give the
perfect launch pad for the actor," the
source added.
Krish, who is known for directing
films such as "Vedam" and "Krishnam
Vande Jagatgurum", is also expected
to team up with Mahesh Babu soon.
"Mahesh's project will go on floors
next year after he completes his film
with Srinu Vaitla. The film has not
been shelved but it has only been
delayed," said the source.
Mahesh Babu, who is busy wrapping
up Telugu action-thriller "1:
Nenokkadine", will team up with
Srinu Vaitla for "Aagadu" soon. Mahesh's project with Krish is titled
"Shivam", and features Sonakshi

Bollywood actor John Abraham, who has

action is much safer outside India.
"For Madras Cafe, we have shot the

The film is an intelligently disguised
story of a man whom history cannot faze
out easily. Milkha Singh's life story has
the right ingredients for a clever biopic
which Prasoon Joshi and Rakeysh
Omprakash Mehra have executed with delectable imagination. At no point does
the film scatter in terms of story or
intention, steering close to the relevant
facts. Mehra rightfully reuses his Rang De
Basanti style of narration which works
to enhance the film's tempo by absorbing your attention into it even
more.
The story's melodrama is restricted,
keeping the dramatic bits plain. It is
painful to see the Partition sequences of
the story which have been carried out
remarkably. In a particular sequence,
where the young Milkha Singh slips on a puddle of blood after his
entire 'pind' has
been wiped off is the most fearsome
portrayal of wretchedness! The story's
tainted scenes weave the haunting air
fantastically and yet the cherishable
moments maintain the story's sheen. A couple of scenes are beyond the
dimensions of cinematic marvel and
ooze innocence wrapped in simplistic
story telling!
From the glee of getting his first India
blazer to when he loses the qualifying
match in Melbourne to when he breaks
down crying the pent up tears of years ,
the story's terrain is smartly packed with
judicious amounts of highs and lows, making the film's recipe flawless.
Star Performances:
Farhan Akhtar has immersed in himself
the soul of Milkha Singh. Giving the best
work of his career, he is resplendent as
Milkha Singh. He brings out Milkha's
vulnerability with charm and his passion
with force. There is comfortable and effortless energy Farhan infuses in his
role which makes me sure no one could
have played it better than him. The actor
will impress you with the work he has
done in his physique. He has drawn a
believable, grounded and exemplary picture of a man whose story people are
less fluent with. With this unblemished
portrayal, Farhan will astound you!
Sonam Kapoor has a lovely tinge in her
little role in her limited screen time, she
will flatter you enough that you actually
feel bad that Milkha and Biro eventually
part ways!
Divya Dutta plays Farhan's older sister
spotlessly well. A pillar of support and
maternal love, she plays helplessness
with command. A victim of domestic
violence and marital rape, she paints the
hues of her character commendably.
Pavan Malhotra shines through every
scene with a first rate work and amazes
you with his easy confidence.

After Delhi 6, Mehra faced a stark low

I try to re-invent myself with every number: Prabhu Deva
the only thing that matters to him now is his movies.
# Unlike your previous films, Ramaiyya Vastavaiyya doesn't boast of
A-listers like an Akshay Kumar or a Salman Khan.
You are introducing Kumar Taurani's son Girish Kumar. Are you worried
about the box-office reception?
I am quite tensed as we are launching a newcomer. It's a question of
his career. As much as the box-office reception of the film is
bothering me, the buzz created is something that has made me
optimistic. Thankfully, the promotions are going well, and even the
songs seem to have caught up.
# Your films, which are generally formulaic, almost never get any
critical acclaim. Does that bother you?
So what? Everybody from actors to producers to technicians who work on
my films are extremely happy with me, and that's what matters the
most. It is their hard work and faith, which gets rewarded at the
box-office. Critics are entitled to their opinion, but they rarely
affect the way I approach my work.
# In comparative terms, where do you think Bollywood scores over the
Southernfilm industry?
Well, both the industries are growing at an exponential pace. I'm glad
to be a successful part of both. In Bollywood, we've started
announcing the release date way in advance; something that doesn't
quite happen in the South. It reflects a disciplinary attitude, which
is a very healthy trend.
# What's this fascination for grabbing the sleeve or the collar of
your shirt while dancing? Is that your signature move?
(Laughs) Honestly, it is not a very conscious move. You are pointing
out the collar and sleeve, but there are many more things I hold on
to! There's nothing as a 'Prabhu Deva signature move'. I try
to re-invent myself with every number.
# Your marriage wasn't successful. Your relationship with Nayanthara
went kaput. How has that affected the artiste in you?
There are ups and downs in everybody's life and mine is not an
exception. You have to move on, keep the focus on your work and try to
be as happy as you can be despite the personal troubles. As long as my
films are working, I am more than happy.
# But does immersing yourself in work really help you forget your
personal upheavals?
Honestly, it doesn't. But it is perhaps the best alternative. I love
my work more than anything, but is that an answer for my problems? No,
it isn't. Whenever something personal bothers me, I tell myself to
take it easy, keep smiling, and be happy. So far, this mantra has
worked.
Don 3 To Start By September 2013!
Yes, you heard it right! If sources are
to be believed then Farhan Akhtar is
going to start to work on the
concluding part of the Don series, i.e.,
Don 3! Farhan Akhtar has already
spoke to co-producer Ritesh Sidhwani about the whole project including the
script and will start working on its
pre-production duties once Bhaag
Milkha Bhaag releases on the 12th of
July this year.
Shah Rukh Khan has already given the
nod for the 3rd part of the Don series
and once he is free from all the
promotional campaigns for his
upcoming release Chenai Express,
which is to release on 8th August this year and is directed by Rohit Shetty,
also starring Deepika Padukone.

Abraham's next movie 'Madras
Cafe'.This is the second home
production of Abraham after the much
acclaimed 'Vicky Donor'. 'Madras Cafe'
is also directed by the Vicky Donor director Shoojit Sircar. Nargis Fakhri is
the leading lady in the movie and this
is her second movie after 'Rockstar'
opposite Ranbir Kapoor in 2011.
Madras Cafe is a hard hitting Indian
crime political thriller. The main role
of an Indian intelligence agent in the
film is played by John Abraham, while
Nargis Fakhri, who is the female lead
plays an international reporter. The film also deals with the subject of
terrorism, and will be shot in India
and Sri Lanka. The film was earlier
titled Jaffna. Movie is all set to release
on August 23, 2013.

by Nitin Raikwar. The sequel to the
1998 superhit Satya is directed by
Ram Gopal Varma and stars Puneet Singh Ratn and Anaika.
'Satya 2' is about a man who comes in
2013 to reinvent the underworld.
Armed with the knowledge which he
has acquired through research and
study of mistakes made by all
previous underworld dons, he starts a new underworld company which
operates just like any corporate
organization. He also develops ways
to deal with the modern day policing
methods. So 'Satya 2' is about a man
whose thinking starts where earlier dons' thinking ended.
No Size-Zero For Huma Qureshi ?
Daayan', the curvier Huma Qureshi
feels Size Zero is not her cup of tea.
Three-film-old Huma Qureshi, who has
managed to garner equal adulation
and flak for her curves in the size-
zero-obsessed industry, prefers to be
her pretty self rather than falling for
the fad.
Huma was loved for her voluptuous
figure and earthy style in her first
movie 'Gangs of Wasseypur'. But she
was criticized by some quarters for
her weight issues.
"In 'Gangs of Wasseypur' I was
the pretty girl, it was glamorous
role. In 'Ek Thi Daayan' I was the
heroine. I have always been the
pretty girl".
I think there are people who have
a craze about size zero but today
we do have heroines who are
curvier, " Huma said in an
interview.
"Either you think of it (weight) as
a problem or as an added
advantage. I would like to be
known for my personality rather
than size zero, I am an actress. I
don't want to be a hanger, " she said.
Well, can this be a dig at the hot babe
Kareena Kapoor who brought this
trend in Bollywood ?
5 Point Review For Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
show of Farhan Akhtar's Bhaag Milkha
Bhaag which releases tomorrow, so
here's what I thought about the biopic
in five points.
1. The reason why there were sky high expectations from Bhaag Milkha
Bhaag was that this year none of the proclaimed superstars of
Bollywood (except perhaps Akshay's Special Chabbis) will deliver
anything that is expected to be an exceptional cinematic experience,
i.e., critically. That along with Rakeysh Omprash Mehra's return after
the forgettable Delhi 6 and of course Farhan Akhtar! Even though I
just cannot say i am disappointed, I can't say I was mesmerized as
well.
2. The story which stretches from 1947 to 1960, traces Milkha Singh's
life from his early days to the time he was 25 years old. When Milkha
decides not to run in the 'Peace Games' between India and Pakistan,
everyone including Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is confused as to why?
Thus, his initial trainer or Guruji, played by Pawan Malhotra recites
the tale of the Flying Sikh during a long train journey to Chandigarh.
3. Farhan Akhtar is the sole reason to blindly go to the theaters and
watch the movie. His physique, his style and his conviction towards
the character is overwhelming. There's no questioning his resemblance
to the legendary sprinter. Almost certain to get the filmfare award
this year I guess.
4. The rest of the performances in the movie are rather average to be
honest. They say Sonam charged just Rs 11 for the movie, and I think
the brevity of her role would have anyway amounted to that only. Dilip
Tahil as Jawaharlal Nehru has no charisma whatsoever and Yograj
Singh(Yuvraj's Father) who's the national coach chips in with a good
performance. Divya Dutta too is not anything super! So many
characters, yes the movie is definitely LONG!
5. The background score is extremely disappointing, especially in the
first half and honestly the scenes apart from the ones which were
related to the races aren't good enough to give the whole 'EPIC!'
feeling. Mehra does well but not great and so do Shankar Ehsaan and
Loy!
Still, it is definitely a must watch film, there is no doubt about
that. But apart from FARHAN AKHTAR, is there anything else in the film
worthy of getting the 4.5 -5 stars it has been getting? I don't think
so!
3.5/5 For Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. A well made film which tastes great just
because of its main ingredient! Plus Rebecca Breeds ♥ !
P.S.- You would surely want to run on the treadmill after watching
Farhan's Muscles!
Celebs welcome Shahrukh Khan's baby boy AbRam
have named AbRam! AbRam was born on May 27 at
Masrani Hospital and was then taken to
Nanavati and Breach Candy Hospital as he
was a premature baby, before he was
brought home. SRK made the happy
announcement through a statement thereby clarifying all the controversies
about the new born.
"Amidst all the noise that has been going
around, the sweetest is the one made by
our new-born baby, AbRam. He was born
prematurely by several months but has
finally come home. Gauri and our whole
family have been dealing with his health issues for quite some time now. As a
family our silence on this subject has
been because of the personal nature of
emotional strife that we have been going
through due to his health," said SRK in his

amazes you. It's fun and goofy, and if you
are with a set of mad friends, you can
always turn this track on and indulge in
some mindless banter.
What caught our attention are the
wonderful hues. From the costumes to
the locations – everything is so bright –
not in a jarring but in mood uplifting
kinda way. We like Deepika's spirited
attitude in the song – there's a spring in every step. And SRK is as
always high on
energy. We also like the 'singing in the
open jeep' idea- very retro. The old school
effect is something we totally approve
of. The flavour of Chennai is captured in
an absolute filmi ishtyle, with SRK and Dippy going all ballistic in a playful
manner –very cool we say!
